Luck was shinning over me that day as I got the shot below and I am pretty darn happy about it. So I set out to capture a number of different shots and compositions. Perhaps the coffee I had already consumed and/or the fresh air kicked my brain into gear, but I realized that I could use a technique called in camera motion to capture the waves and light in abstract fashion and not need a tripod. How many hundreds of times have I been out shooting the sunrise and remembered to bring my tripod? Less than 3 for sure.Īs I approached the lake near my friends Pam and Stasia, I became enchanted how the soft warm light was hitting the lake and waves. As I walked back, I was peeved at myself. I tried a few hand held shots at super high ISO to see if I could get the shot I was hoping. I go to grab my tripod and…….realized that my old brain did not yet have enough coffee to kick it into gear as I forgot my tripod. I arrive at my spot and put my gear down. We arrive and span out, each of us looking for that compelling and interesting foreground to shoot our epic sunrise shot.

We met the parking lot and gave each other a virtual hug and then set out for a small walk to the place along the lake where we wanted to shoot the sunrise. Because the weather forecast was not looking great we decided to plan the rest of the outing based on our desires and weather after the sunrise shoot.

So a small subset of the group decided to set out very early one morning in November last year to catch the sunrise at Lake Minnewanka. I had not been out with my photo buddies group because of……you guessed it, our favourite pandemic. Well leave it to me to kick off this Adventure project of mine on a spur of the moment decision. When you plan a big multi year project, you generally plan a formal kick off, sometimes big sometimes small.
